Capell & Howard files amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the Alabama Legislature in important legislative redistricting case

On behalf of the Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives and the President Pro Tempore of the Alabama Senate, attorney Chris Weller filed an amicus brief in the Alabama legislative redistricting case scheduled for oral argument before the United States Supreme Court on November 12, 2014. This case is one of the most important cases pending before the Court during this term. The United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama rejected challenges by the Alabama Democratic Conference and the Alabama Black Legislative Caucus to the Alabama Legislature’s 2012 legislative redistricting plans. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a one-hour consolidated oral argument in the appeal of the decision entered in Alabama Legislative Black Caucus, et al. v. Alabama, et al., No. 13-895 and Alabama Democratic Conference, et al. v. Alabama, No. 13-1138. The Office of the Speaker requested that Mr. Weller submit an amicus brief in support of the interests of the Legislature in upholding redistricting plans and in preserving fundamentally important principles of federalism regarding the essentially local function of redistricting. A copy of the brief will be available on the ABA website at: http://www.americanbar.org/publications/preview_home/13-895.html
